Confronting Sexual Harassment with BAWIP!

At least 25% of women experience sexual harassment in the workplace, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).  They also noted that 87-94% of harassment claims go unreported, and when acted on, can cost companies millions.  Whether you are an employer, employee, or a freelancer, this discussion organized by Bay Area Women in Publishing will inform you about how to protect yourself and your business.. Tess Smagorinsky is an HR leader and performance coach who cut her teeth learning trial-by-fire style in the tech world. Tess has worked with hundreds of businesses across the country to coach business leaders on how to run a more dynamic and compliant workplace. She is passionate about empowering women in leadership, and creating work environments where all employees can function as allies. She is currently at New Relic, where she is an HR Business Partner for their global Client Services Group.

Linda is a creative, energetic, and responsive human resources professional with thirty years of experience.  As an experienced trainer, Linda has conducted countless sessions in harassment and discrimination avoidance, diversity and inclusion and respect in the workplace. Since the Fox News, Uber, and other harassment scandals were revealed, and following the #MeToo Movement escalating social awareness and prompting further revelations, Linda’s dance card has been full in providing customized training to a variety of companies in diverse industries.

Jane is a seasoned human resources executive with over thirty years of experience building high-impact teams. At Benetech, Jane is responsible for human resources and all other administrative functions required for organizational success. A member of the ADP Client Advisory Council as a voice for accessibility, she previously managed the human resources and administration functions at Calera Recognition Systems, a for-profit tech company found by Benetech Founder and CEO, Jim Fruchterman. Jane is passionate about helping others and believes we can improve the lives of people in underserved communities through the power of technology. Jane enjoys reading, needle arts, skiing, and travel. Jane has a BA degree in Sociology from Stanford University.

Kelly Peterson, the Director of Client Services at INscribe Digital, brings 20+ years of marketing and merchandising experience to her current role.  She helps major trade publishers, university press, independent publishers, authors and agents maximize their eBook sales and marketing efforts at the major retailers. Prior to INscribe, Kelly worked at Borders Group Inc. for 14 years, initially with Waldenbooks and later running the eBook program.  She sits on the board of Bay Area Women in Publishing, and leads the educational events programming. Kelly is also a proud board member of IBPA, the Independent Book Publishers Association, beginning July 2018.  She sees every Oscar nominee each year, and is always ready with a book or movie recommendation. Kelly loves talking about metadata and algorithms at a moment's notice, and believes that everyone has it within themselves to change the world.
